The Silurian Period was a time of giant reefs with spectacular marine life! Starting after the disastrous end to the Ordovician period, this period was a time when Earth's climates finally started stabilizing. Although it is quite short, lasting only 27 million years, it harbors some amazing changes that were all seen in the Silurian Period. Among these changes was the evolution of jawed fish, such as the Andreolepis. (See left) During the first half of the Silurian period, most of the continents were covered by glaciers. However, towards the later portion of the Silurian period, the conditions became a lot more bearable. The climate was at around 80 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit, so bring out the sunglasses! (See below) The marine life, although beautiful, can be quite deadly! So watch out! Creatures such as the Eurypterus, a three-foot long sea scorpion, were quite common! (See bottom)
